Europa Grande is a non-profit association founded in 2001 with the mission of promoting EU enlargement for an ever closer union amongst the peoples of Europe. One of the rationales for our focus on enlargement was that, the larger the union became, the larger the beneficial effects of trade creation would be relative to the detrimental effects of trade diversion.
When Europa Grande was born, the EU had 15 member states, a number which has almost doubled ever since. The EU has also signed association and trade agreements with many important nations and trading blocs around the world, and is constantly negotiating new ones. The EU is also increasing its international presence in the framework of its Common Foreign and Security Policy.
Our association's scope has also evolved, so that Europa Grande currently understands enlargement in a broader sense. It supports not only the further enlargement of EU membership, but also any other initiatives that can expand the global reach of the Union. This includes neighbourhood, trade, development, and common foreign and security policy.
The association is officially registered by the National Registry of Associations of the Spanish ministry of the interior under the category of "arts, humanities and social sciences". Its activities include the sponsorship of teaching, debate and research activities, such as public lectures, summer courses, scientific meetings, and publications, as well as any other activities deemed appropriate to further the objectives of the association.
